Workshop

Body Percussion & Call and Response

with Malaika Mfalme

Friday 17 April, 14:30 - 16:30

Art Room, Studio Take Care

This 2-hour embodied, ancestral music-making workshop with Malaika Mfalme invites participants into collective rhythm-making rooted in East African ancestral knowledge, where music is not something you perform for others, but something you create with each other. In many East African cultures, call and response is a social technology: a way of teaching, grieving, celebrating, organising, and remembering. In Body Percussion & Call and Response, we treat it as such, a living dialogue where everyone has a voice, and leadership moves through the group.

This workshop is designed for BIPOC and trans and gender diverse (TGD) people, but is also open to queer folk and allies. It is open to all levels of musical experience, including none at all. There is no pressure to sing solo or perform. Rest, observation, and participation at your own pace are welcomed and respected.

Guided by the Swahili principle umoja (unity) and the belief that music belongs to everyone, this space centres joy, tenderness, cultural exchange, and the power of making sound together. Karibu, you are welcome in the circle.
